21" vs. 10-12"?

So MRG reported 10-12" total from this storm and Sugarbush is reporting 21". I'm no meteorologist, but come on, how is this possible? We are only talking about a few miles here. I'm not saying there is no way MRG didn't under report, but 9 times out of 10 that is not the case, the incentive just isn't there. Was there really 2 feet of snowfall, or are there wind drifts that are 2 feet in places?

*Note- I am also bitter that I am currently sitting in my cube and the rest of you are out on the slopes, so chime in with that in mind.

If you read further on the MRG site is says that's the initial report but the ski patrol has not reported back and it may go up. It sounds like the reporter threw a number out based on the walk into the building. Either way It's going to be good this weekend.

I have been up early and initially Sugarbush reported 10 -12 inches...then it was updated to 21. Mad River only had one update at 6:30 before the Patrols can provide a better update. My guess is that everyone is enjoying the 20+ inches of Pow including the webmaster.

My Plow guy confirms 20+" at just above the base. Please, I need some video/photo ski porn to get me thru to Saturday's leftovers. Please post'em early and often. I just can't keep watching that Chinese Fire Drill clip over and over.

Friends called from the Glen House during my lunch and their view is 14" and pretty dense. Both live in the valley and have skied both yesterday and today. So for what it is worth, that's their take on it.

Hard to say.

Some places there was almost none. Other places, over the knees. What was found was less than what fell, as the wind howled, last night. Lots of wind pack.

Lots of sore bodies today.

Certainly not an optimal storm, with the timing of the snowfall and the howling wind, but certainly sounds like a net positive. I bet those who know where the wind-protected zones are are had a good day

Speachless....sore....epic.... all valid words to describe my experience today.

Didn't experience much windblown... a little bit on the top of Ripcord, which we had to go down since my buddy dropped his glove from HG. Was quite happy to hear HG opened around 11am. Pick runs for the day? That is hard to say... everything was good... Morning Star, Moonshine, Jester, Murphy's, Lower Birdland, Birch Run, Sunrise... somebody stop me! Didn't make it to Castlerock, but there's always next time. Moonshine was great, it being off the beaten path. Morning Star below NL liftline was out of this world. Sleeper Road was... groomed -- the switchbacks not shown on the trail map. Not a frown to be found on the mtn.

I never got over to Sunrise, today, but Morning Star was really sweet. Had to stop and say I didn't know how to ski it. I have been dodging the friendly and unfriendly dark spots. And today. . . they were a little hard to find.


My pick of the day was Eden. My second run into it, I only saw one set of tracks.

People died early, such that my last run thru there, I was the only person in there the entire time.


What a day! I can hardly move, tonight. And somehow.... I have the feeling I'll be skiing tomorrow morning.

I never got over to Sunrise, today, but Morning Star was really sweet. Had to stop and say I didn't know how to ski it. I have been dodging the friendly and unfriendly dark spots. And today. . . they were a little hard to find.

Personally, I thought Morning Star was the best run over on the Lynx today, followed closely by Birch Run. There were the usual 2 spots up top, marked by the 'boo', but they were far less damaging today than earlier in the week.

Not to be a hater, but from the stoke I've seen and first hand reports on the slopes it appears the resort got a little overzealous with their snowfall reporting. MRG stuck with their 10-12" when all was said and done, even though a few were saying they would increase it as the day went on.

I wasn't the only one out there noticing this inconsistency. As a passholder to both mountains, I find this irresponsible. A lot of you folks will give me a hard time for arguing this point, but when "Chad from patrol calls in 21" a lot of day-tripper revenue probably switched from MRG to the Bush.

I'd love to hear more firsthand reports and commentary from the mountain (and hope to be proved wrong), but I'm just calling it as I see it as an observer many miles away with a lot of input from many different sources who skied both areas.

When it comes down to it, it snowed a Sh*tload, but someone needs to keep places in check if they are taking advantage of self-reporting snowfall. A few mountains have reputations for overreporting and I'd hate to see the Bush be one of them.

the first foot came during the day on Weds so it got skied as it fell and the bush also did a lot of grooming weds night too. .

People were on a mission yesterday and it sure got skied...

conditions are very good.

haven't been on mountain yet, but I'm .5 mile from the base and there is definitely more than a foot here. and it's snowing again.

I agree with this report. Wednesday was the actual " powder " day. Soft pillows...yum. Thursday was great weatherwise but the conditions were mostly windslab. Even in the woods , except for some protected spots. 21" is above my knees and if I took my skis off , which unfortunately was necessary at one point ; { , it was right there.
