Think Elvis was called the King of Rock n' Roll. Jerry Lee was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in '86, one of the first. Disco was a flash in the pan - an embarrasing one at that. That's just me though. My guess is the organizers think disco is easier to dance by? Since I don't dance unless I have trees and deep to dnace with, I'd vote for R&R. Either way, it will be fun.

    Elvis not Rock 'n Roll?

    Hawk,
You disappoint me. I realize that you are but a mere youth, however, pre-Army Elvis was certainly Rock'nRoll. Vegas Elvis is another matter, embarassing unless you also like Jerry Vale etc.In the Sun Records years Elvis cribbed the emerging genre from the black blues shouters, mixed it with a little hillbilly, and made it Rock'nRoll, e.g. Hound Dog was originally Big Mama Thornton, Good Rockin' Tonight was originally Wynonie Harris, etc. Despite the racism that prevented the originators from cross-over hits, as far as music is concerned, it doesn't get any more authentic Rock than early Elvis. Yes Jerry Lee Lewis was big, until he married his 12 year old cousin--marriage lasted, career didn't. Connie Francis?--- more pop than Rock, IMHO. Pretty soon thereafter came Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley Little Richard and a steady stream of rockin. These were the years when it all began, and what a long, strange trip it's been.
I don't want to be pedantic, so if you need more enlightenment I refer you to Scooter--- he knows his stuff.

Your right. The fifties did start the R&R era. I just feel that the real onset of rock wasn't until the sixties. The fifties had a more R&B feel at least for me. Believe me, I have 5 older sisters that spun more vinyl then I care to remember. Elvis was a staple.

Tree, have you ever seen the Motor Booty Affair? They put on quite a show. It's not all disco. They do some great funk tunes. I think Win is right. You will like them if haven't seen them.

Some of you might remember these....Notorious, Lostone, Win?

Were these songs playing at the base lodge?, or was it ALWAYS in favor to play "retro" music at ski resorts? (in which case it would have been 20's music playing in 1958!)

    songs of 58

The sad thing is I can remember having to listen to a lot of those songs on my dad's eight-track in the seventies!

Then that was an "oldies" tape, because 8 tracks didn't come out until the 60s.

I rolled the car that had my last 8 track player, with an open can of orange soda. The car continued, but the 8 track was forevermore sticky.

Ok... Soooo whats a sloshwicking race??

  11. #26
It is a short obstacle race with a ski, a snowshoe and a broom.

If they want to be authentic, it should be the 108th annual sloshwick, as they were all the 108th.
