    Let's talk disc golf...

Or, as I refer to it, wandering around in the bushes, wondering where the disc might have gotten to.

It may be the most popular activity, as it is good for all ages, and all abilities... better than mine.

Not a bad way to spend a couple hours. It can be pretty, but I have gone into the Adventure Gear shop and complained about them selling me a defective disc. The power steering is all screwed up, and the brakes don't seem to work, either.

People say that it might be me, but I can't believe that!

I have gotten my disc stuck in a tree. The tree was a beech tree. There were marks where a bear had climbed it, but you can never find a bear when you want one. And if I found one, what is to say that he wouldn't want to take the disc and go play, himself? Where does a 300lb bear play disc golf? Anywhere he wants.

And then the bear would be better than me, too!

And last week, I found these two on the course, and I don't think they ever paid!

I have hit the top of the target, and had the disc roll back down, landing right next to me.

I have carefully lined up my shot. It has to go to the right of that tree, then curve to the left, around that other tree. But it went straight out to the right, burying itself in thick raspberry bushes. (By the way, great raspberries, this year! They're all over! )

I have found myself with leaves between me and the target. I decided to throw it hard to blast thru them, to have it hit a tree, 3 feet in front of me, and bounce back and hit me.

But I'm having fun! Isn... Isn't that what I'm having?

So, if you have a little time to spare, why not go for a walk in the woods and throw a disc around? It is good exercise and you'll quickly be better than me! And if you see me out there, say hello, and help me find my disc... That's likely what I'm doing, is looking for it.

Anyone else playing? Have any good stories?

from another thread, about Sunday's aborted disc golf and following hike:

I had some problem trying to decide to play the upper course, or hike to the top . . . until I was throwing at the pin for the second hole, and the disk made a solid left turn.

For those that aren't aware, the left of the approach to pin 2 is the same as going straight instead of turning left, on the last turn on Jester, toward Allyn's Traverse.

That means the disc left the trail and dropped about 25 feet of the ugliest climbing.

I decided to hike to the top, where it was one of the clearest days. Too bad the color wasn't a little more advanced. Everyone I saw was in a great mood, and remarked what a nice day it was. 44° at the peak.

Instead of taking the lift back down, I hiked to the bottom, playing what ever holes I passed and felt like. To put it another way, I hiked to the bottom by way of a lot of segments of woods.

The pix from a few of the disc golfers and one with a few hikers, on Sunday, are now up. There are a few I felt were pretty good scenery pix that will be up shortly, in another album. First a few of the pix of disc golf, as I was just starting out.

The other pix from Sunday start half way thru page 35 of my summer activities album.

But the big news about disc golf, is the big tournament that is happening this weekend. This is part of the national tour. The actual tournament, I believe, starts Friday. But tomorrow night there is a clinic with some of the pros, from 5-7PM. I spoke with a couple from Iowa, who sere here to get ready for it. They promised me that they would be able to help me not suck so badly.

They have been doing a lot of work on the course. For those of you who haven's seen it for a while, you'll be shocked. They have moved two of the targets way out, and today they had a new one set up for hole 13. (?) I didn't play it, as I am having enough trouble with the pins we already had. .

More info on the tournament on the Sugarbush website.

Between that, the free ride fest, starting of the foliage change and good weather . . . should be a good weekend!

A bunch of them started rolling in yesterday while I was at the Mt. Campers and all. It's just like nascar!
Couldn't get over the way these folks were streching and warming up to play frisbee.
Far more than any mt biker I have ever seen.

This should be fun to watch.
Maybe Lostone can score a gig as caddie?

Last weekend, I walked out of the gear shop and there was a woman with a real friendly dog. The dog had a pack on with an assortment of discs. The woman said "She's going to be my caddy!"

How could I compete with that?

Well I went to the clinic.

I was quite impressed. First of all, the guy of the couple from Iowa was the guy running the clinic. He is the 7 time Mens World Champion, SRO mentioned.

Apparently, this isn't something they've been doing all along, but something they just started. Hard to count, but I'd guess there were well more than 50 people, there. It was given by 6 pros. 4 were men, and two were women.

As someone who's whole learning process has been try something and see how it works, with a few tips from others who were around, I picked up a ton! Do I still suck? Well . . . yeah . . . Probably.

    But maybe in a little while . . .

And they don't seem to be looking for caddies, but if anyone has in interest in spotting for them, for the weekend tournament, they'd love to hear from you.

Ken Climo is a 12 time world champion. Des Reading is a one time world champion. Her husband ( the one who ran the clinic) I don't think was ever world champion.
Another woman there last night is the current world champion.

The wild thing is, the people giving the clinic all make their living playing disc golf!!!!

That's almost as silly as making a living skiing.

I went to the clinic for a while too. I throw a disc about 40 yards and it look like a golf slice. Those guys (gender neutral) we throwing 200 yards in a straight line. Pretty incredible. What was interesting it that the principle of using your core and following through with the arms is rather similar to "ball" golf.

When I tell people how I carefully plan out my shot, then throw the disc to have it shoot directly to the right, burying itself in the bushes, they inevitably say, "Oh it is just like regular golf!"

And I saw you smile when she said "Drive for show. Putt for dough"

Well, today I checked out the tournament page and found they were starting around noon, so I headed out around 10:30 to see if I could get in a round before they took over the course. When I got there, I found tht they'd started around 9:00.

So I had my Minolta with me, so I wandered around and took a bunch of pix of various groups. I took 204 pix, and sorted 53 as possibles for posting. Got some fairly good shots. Hoping to get in some more, in the next two days.

As someone who just started this, this year, these people are incredible, to me. I saw 2 drives, today that were in the realm of what I do. Everyone else shot so far beyond. I can't tell you how many people I told that I hated.

They seemed to be dealing with it well, tho. One told me he has been playing for 30 years! I've been asking a lot of people that are internet friends from around the country, and only one has ever heard of disc golf!

    They call that expansion potential!

Did anyone else get out to watch the pros play?

There were some pretty good players out there. I got out all three days. I brought my camera with me and took almost 400 pix. There are some (most) that are just disc golf, some that are just mountain biking, some that are just scenery, and some that are a combination of two. . . or three.

I have made a quick pass thru them and selected ~160 pix that I'll be reducing and posting in the near future. Some of them are quite good. I'm hoping to get them up in the next week. But first, I have to get out and feed my addiction. I only played part of a round since Thursday. Plus, I want to try out some of the tips I picked up at the clinic. My aim is to not suck as much.

But I was so glad the weather turned and we had the clear day, yesterday. It was lovely up there Saturday, but the views, yesterday were gorgeous! I thought it was great for people to get a chance to look around and see the beauty of the valley.

Finally got the first batch up. That was the group from Friday's matches. I have Saturday's reduced and ready to go up. Tomorrow, if it rains, I should get them up and maybe Sunday's too.

For now, you can view Friday's here.

Many more to go up, and some more pre-tournament and mountain biking, too.

And now the pix from Saturday are up.

Sunday's are edited and reduced. I'm starting to put them up right about now.

    See Saturday's pix here.

They are followed by pix from pond skimming, this spring.
