Lance Armstrong was in town yesterday for a charity event at Sugarbush. He tweeted an invitation around lunch saying it was a beautiful day and inviting anybody who wanted to ride Duxbury Gap with him yesterday afternoon.

lancearmstrong: Hey Vermont - let's ride!! 4pm in Waterbury. Corner of Main St & Warren Ct, what looks like a park. #twitterride!

By the time we got to 100/100B there must have been almost 500 riders. Quite an event!

We are lucky to live in such an amazing place!

Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong will speak at a Wednesday fundraiser at Sugarbush Resort in Warren for the Mary E. Haas Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Foundation.

Last year, the dinner brought in $106,000 for early detection research for ovarian cancer -- a particularly severe form of cancer. This year, the $250-a-plate dinner is sold out. About 250 people are expected, and some people are paying $1,000 for a private reception with Armstrong.
The longtime cyclist many years ago fought his own battle against cancer and created a foundation to help fight the disease.

The Mary Haas Ovarian Cancer Early Detection Foundation was established in honor of longtime Vermont resident and former Merrill Lynch First Vice President Mary Haas, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer July 12, 2009, 15 months after being diagnosed.
Meredith Burak is president of the foundation and Haas' daughter.

"Ovarian cancer should no longer be a death sentence, and that is why the Mary Haas Foundation was established -- to break the silence to save women's lives," Burak said in a news release. "While others continue to seek a cure for cancer, the Mary Haas Foundation seeks to save lives -- now -- through early detection."
At the request of the organization, Wednesday's fundraiser will not be open to the media, Burak said.

Getting to meet him last night at the dinner for the Mary Haas Foundation was a special treat. Not only is he a great athelete, he is a terrific human being.
