If haven’t heard already, we’ve got the potential for some big natural snow starting Friday evening through Saturday evening. My favorite forecaster Scott Braaten, has published a little dissertation on the storm at http://www.famousinternetskiers.com/.

One of the greatest weather words is mentioned, bombogenesis. It means what it says and it's fun to say too. The latest forecast is for 10-18” for upper elevations. Start the snow bombs!

I am going to have two huge snow bombs on my turkey plate. gonna cover them in lots of Gravy. Doing my snow dance really hard. So, if it is wet and heavy and packs in real good. Any chance of the lifts turning by Sunday. Bring on the 8 inch rule. get out the black tubes to cover the water bars. Lets go, my Jones is spent at this point. I need to ski!!! going to say grace to ULLR and Ma Nature.

More reason for excitement- Josh Fox's winter forecast. Calling for 300 inches this winter!

Ok, take a look at http://www.mountsnow.com/livecamshot.html and tell me thats not snow shown on the summit CAM at Mt Snow! (Why there are no CAMS at the 'Bush is beyond me). It makes sense that its already snowing up top as Mt Washington is 28 and Barre is 39. So I think that winter - or at least the "snow season" - of 09/10 has begun! :D

Now, Win, assuming say 12"+ (and some forecasts I've seen are well north of a foot at 4,000') of good early season wet snow, and snowmaking temps starting mid-afternoon or so, can Sunday be opening day? Even if you can't do it for other reasons, is it theoretically possible given the snowmaking firepower at Lincoln Peak? I've gotta think that it would be possible at ME off the summit lift and down Rim Run.

The long range forescaster at Accuweather is very bullish about today starting a cold and snowy pattern for the next month or so - even if its not straight down to below normal. Wax 'em up! :D

If there were a webcam at the top of Heaven's Gate, right now, you'd get a good view of the clouds.

On the good side, it appears as the inversion that has been hanging around may have given up. From the website, it is 40° at the bottom, and 30° at the peak.

Yes, good point. I'd actually suggest on top of the Bravo summit terminal pointing up and/or at the bottom terminal of ME Summit lift pointing up. But unless I'm mistaken, there are NO cams anywhere at SB.

Thanks Noski, didn't know about the Warren Store CAM.

Norm's is an awesome shot. But still nothing on Mountain like other areas.

Strat, why is this debate not allowed?

It's not disallowed, per se, it's just been the subject of many heated discussions in the past. It's one of those issues that seems to come up every year.

Given the fact that the ground has not frozen and that there are some deep water bars on the trails, even 12" of natural snow would not allow an opening of the lifts. We have resumed snowmaking and this along with some of the natural snow we are getting should allow for a good opening next Friday. Anyone who is hiking and skiing needs to be very careful of what is under foot.

Thanks for the input Win (here and in the other forum's - one reason that the 'Bush is what it is today is beacuse of your hands-on approach). I figured 12" wasn't the magic cure-all for opening. But it sure makes us all FEEL better. Same for your comment "We have resumed snowmaking"! :D We look forward to Firday, even if some of us won't be able to join.

All,

The snow that fell is most likely pretty wet and wind driven, with some icing on top. I skied Sunday River this morning (was on the 4th or 5th chair) and it was scoured at the top and rock hard ice, then into the actual skiing it was a frozen breakable that skied nicely for about 90 min before the crowd made the mid station lift line not worth it. This kind of "base glue" should help get things rolling at SB for a good opening.
