Just guessing, but I assume the entrance will be where the Claybrook sales desk was.

Beyond that would be interfering with the cafeteria.

If the boot room had an entrance on the West side of the building they would have to install a stair down to it. The boot room is on the lower level. I am assuming when you say west side you are talking about the back side when facing the building from Claybrook.

That's exactly what I'm asking. Having another entrance not going through the lobby would be good.

So the construction on the back side of the lodge is a boot room and not a seating expansion? I'm confused but I'm sure Lostone will get the real story.

the official word.....

"A half-a-million dollar expansion to the two-year old Gate House Lodge. Turns out the "If you build it, they will come" philosophy really works. Since opening the new Lincoln Peak Village, we've had a bunch of new faces showing up at our door. So many in fact, that we need to add more seats. Soooo.... we will be expanding the Castlerock Pub (downstairs level of the Gate House Lodge) by approximately 1,200 square feet, and expanding the kitchen as well to increase better menu offerings. On top of the addition will be a deck that will walk off to snow. The deck will have a barbeque and fire pit. (It will be to skiers' left of the Super Bravo quad, to give you an idea where this is all going down.) We will also be building an addition onto the top floor of the Gate House Lodge for additional food court seating. Construction will begin in September and the additions will be open by Christmas week".

The entire GH is licensed including the new deck. The "new" boot room on the second floor will be the old Maple Room - the narrow room on the East side of the Lodge on the second floor. The new addition will provide extra seating and in the non-ski season will serve as a break out room for conference held in the GH!

Win -

Thanks for the clarification. My $0.02 is that repurposing the Maple Room is a good move. It always seemed a little out of place, and it now enables people to change and store their stuff on the same floor, which is more convenient than the current set-up. Is the additional seating space on the upper level equivalent to what you're losing in the Maple Room, or a little less? It looks a touch smaller, but it's hard to tell.

Aside from accessing the new deck from the snow adjacent to the Bravo lift (great move, BTW), will there be an additional entrance from the South wall of the GH lodge where the windows are now? Also, with a larger kitchen downstairs, how will the F&B situation change down there during the daytime and apres ski?

Is the area under construction on the west side abutting the current entrance for added kitchen capacity?

I think if you look at the pics on the first page of this thread, it indicates that the new seating area is on the West side of GH lodge, to the North of the northern-most entrance. Sort of up hill from where the beer tap temporarily was, and what eventually became the Claybrook sale area. might extend as far North so as to be up hill of where you would grab your tray and silverware when heading into the food court at GH.

That makes a lot of sense. Fundamentally, the previous set up resulted in a huge waste of space, with the downstairs deck area only being usable for 20-30% of the ski season at most. In a world in which people were crammed into the CR Pub cheek by jowl, it really wasn't justifiable to have all that empty space out there for most of the season.

Here are the latest I've posted. I have more recent ones still in Mr Camera, but I've been working at clearing disk space. I had 3 CDs of pix that I've been sorting, editing and moving to CDs.

Most of that is done, and I'm posting some of them. When they are done, I'll post links.

In the mean time, things are looking quite pretty, up here and I'm a shooting fool. I'm afraid that when I get around to unloading the cards, I'll have over a gig of pix taken since last unloading.

For now, I have a few pix taken up to 9-25, but they are cooking with this, so these pix are quite dated, already.

It's looking awesome, the positive side of the warmup is that they can really crank on it this week. Interestingly they put pavers down for the floor of the deck with under the deck heating with hot water. Also, those who have not been up in awhile will notice a big change where the Blue Tooth was. The new owner of the Den and his family came into the shop last weekend, sounds like it's going to be an awesome sports bar. Can't remember off the top of my head the new name. noski?

Hey it could be a really big gas fire. Plus with gas you don't really have to worry about down drafts when it is really windy. Thus having a fire all the time and not smoking out the building. What the heck do I know anyway :?

Outdoor BBQ pit on the new deck to replace the one below for spring sking.. is my bet. The valley already has plenty of smoke pollution from woodstoves/fireplaces, a gas fireplace might not be as cozy as a wood fireplace but all resorts are now trying very hard to be as green as possible.

The chimney is for the gas fireplace (like the one in Timbers) in the new CR Pub annex. What you see on the new patio will be stone in final form and that is where the outdoor BBQ grill will go!

I guess the last pictures taken were on 11/14 here, but I still was kind of hoping that the CR Pub would be opening soon. I have heard two things from people.

1) The hope is to have all the construction done as soon at Feb 15th. Wow!! That soon?? :? (Sorry couldn't resist.)

2)The CR Pub itself will be open by December 15th.

Isn't December 15th after the 50th Anniversary celebration? So no beer for that (or until then) apart from mobile beer stations in the Caf and Timbers? Wouldn't people need copious amounts of booze for a proper 50th Celebration?

Also peeking in through the doors I see a wall that separates the bar with the new area in the CRP. It runs halfway across the room blocking off the bar from the new section. Is that wall coming down to help the flow of traffic to the bar? If not will the bar extend on the other side so there is bar access in the new area?

Just curious. We had some drinks at Timbers after this weekend which wasn't crowded by any means so it didn't really effect us, but as the snow starts coming down I wonder where all the people will get their fix. Is it possible people didn't Apres this weekend (meaning lost revenue) because there was only a Timbers option? (Foolish of them if that's what deterred them, but just an observation)

I would've stayed at the mtn longer on Sunday had the pub been open - not just for the "spirits" but its a great place to reconnect with those you haven't seen since the last season ended. For some reason, the vibe of Timbers just doesn't do it for me. Call me foolish... espec since I've never been in there, but a pub atmosphere I prefer, vs a restaurant with a bar.
Here's to hoping the Castlerock Pub opens before I move over to Mt Ellen for the season!

MntMan4Bush
11-24-2008, 04:15 PM
I understand what you mean about wanting a pub atmosphere. I just meant that little will deter me from beer and football when the options available. Had the CRP been open I would have rather been there. However given the option of no beer and no football or Timbers I would choose Timbers every time. I was just wondering if any didn't spend time in Timbers because it wasn't their scene. It appears some felt that way.

Met with the constractors today and the construction on the CR pub is actually running a bit ahead of schedule. There is a shot but not a guaranttee that it will be ready for the weekend of the 50th (December 12th). The kitchen equipment has been installed and much of the rock work around the fireplace has been completed. The wall you see is the structural wall for the Gate House but there is a large opening to connect the two rooms and from the door you can see the new fireplace now. There are also 5 four seat booths in the new room. There will be more wait staff as well to serve everyone.

MntMan4Bush
11-25-2008, 03:36 PM
Thanks Win. Exactly the answers I was looking for. Just one follow up question. Will the bar extend through the existing wall into the new area or will there be another bar area on the new side for serving? I understand that it is a structural wall , but wasn't sure if it could be supported with beams to allow a pass through section for the bartenders to serve both sides and cut down on the crowd around the existing bar.

Win, thanks for the update. Is it true that there will be beer taps upstairs too? I heard that on the grape vine (um, make that hops vine.) If you started serving switchback upstairs then I think the pub might be empty on most weekends. Any chance of having a fire pit near the patio upstairs or is that going to have wind screens around it?

they had a kegolator by the check outs. So, tap beer. It looked like an Ale.

In good weather we will serve on the upstairs patio. We do have tap beer in the upstairs cafeteria as well. There is a window pass through from the bar into the new room.

Sounds like it won't be 100% ideal due to limitations imposed by the original design, but still a vast improvement over the status quo. Sounds like there will be a separate mini-bar in the Tin Woodsman annex with a window to pass drinks through to from the existing bar?

Hopefully, there was another reason for the drive than the beer? :?

Maybe you didn't hear. It wasn't just any beer. It was tap beer!!! Worth any driving in my book.

On a serious note I'm glad to hear there will be a pass through. Sneaking a peak this weekend had me worried that an entire section would be cordoned off from access to the bar so standing room was increased but not beer delivery capacity, but it sounds like that is not the case. Looking forward to the ribbon cutting/keg tapping ceremony for its grand inauguration. Or if no pomp and circumstance are scheduled at lest looking forward to a good pint pulled by Sean.

Well, they don't serve switchback down here in MA. For some reason I keep getting lost in the woods on my way to the bar in VT.

BTW, how bad was the damage up top today? Was anyone there late in the day? Any reports?

Is the food menu in the CRP going to be mostly the same as last year?
can you watch TV from the new room? sounds like it's going to be an ideal location to watch a football game.
Hopefully this year it'll be open for the superbowl (hint, hint).
