A Sugarbush skier participated in the extreme skiing championships in Alyeska, Alaska this past weekend. His name is Ryan Hawks. He's the son of Peter Hawks one of Sugarbush's backcountry guides. He was a walk-on at the Jackson Hole leg of the extreme skiing tour. He impressed the judges with a back flip of a 50 foot cliff and so they invited him on the rest of the tour. In the video they list him as being from Mad River Glen and that may be true. I've only seen him at the 'bush because they won't let folks like me into Mad River.

The video is on the web. Ryan is the third contestant in the video after a memorial run by a bunch of skiers since a participant died on the first day.

or go to http://usfreeskiing.com/video.html. Click in the "Men's AK finals part 1" on the right and then after it's loaded fast forward to around 16:20. I don't know what his final score was. If someone can find the full standings, please post it.

Congratulations to Ryan. Excellent genes. Dad Peter is Dartmouth outing club, four eventer, ski jumper, and World Champ in his age division in downhill mountain biking. The story of his torn rotator cuff while doing hares and hounds is astounding. While acting as hare, he went off a cliff, tore his shoulder and rode his bike out of the woods using the strength from only one arm, and never got caught by the hounds. Tough guy, and great company.
Nice to see the son follow the path of his Dad, and take it in the direction of big mountain extreme skiing.
