Pick a # from 1 to 10.

Multiply by 9

Subtract 5

If the result is not 4, add the digits together.

If the result is not 4, add the digits together, and the result will be 4.

Dylan may have been a great musical poet but not so good a math.
Take the number7 for example: 7*9=63-5=58; 5+8=13; Not a 4 in sight, guess he was too busy in the basement mixin' up the medicine.

....except that you add the digits together twice as noted in the instructions, so 1+3=4.

I'm sure Bobby D didn't come up with it. He was just using it as a way to introduce # 4 in his countdown, for the countdown theme in his radio show. 8)
