Check it out. I'll need some feedback, be it positive or constructive criticism. I've already found a few little bugs, but I'm sure you'll find some more! I will continue to add content as people send it to me. I could us some more info on the different eras of Sugarbush's history, so if anyone can help out there, I'd appreciate it. As it is now, I've basically reworder and supplemented the historical info available from sugarbush.com.

I don't consider myself a website expert, tho I did build and do maintain my photo site, but I think it looks fantastic. It's awesome just getting those links on the same page. :D

Looks damn good... I guess I could ask you later but what are you doing for the thumbnail images? At least for me they look really crunched, not sure what the right term is but it's not pretty... At least for the ones that are from my site, it looks they're in frames that are smaller than the images themselves, so it's given them that crunchy look... I can easily take the originals and resize them, just let me know...

Couple other quick critiques, I know you're working on stuff... the sidebar buttons are cool, except that when you're at the Home page and that one's highlighted, there's a sort of indeterminate white space between the right edge of the button and the Mountain Stats button... maybe when one is at the home page that button can stay unhighlighted? Or maybe it can just go at the bottom of the bar, so the home page can still be renavigated to from the interior pages, but it won't give that white space thing when one is at the home page because it won't be just to the left of the Mountain Stats button anymore...
Obviously there's some spacing issues around too (History page for example) but that always happens...

Now that I'm done with criticism, wow! Looks awesome! I have more maps to send... probably will email them along soon... let me know about the thumbnail version stuff though...

Site looks good - nice presentation and some good information. Gives my site a run for its $$$, then again, I don't just focus on Sugarbush.

Nice clean design. Well done. Check with loafer89 over on the AZ forums. He's a ski map/memorabilia pack rat. He might have some stuff to contribute. teachski from AZ or SnowJournal might have some stuff too.

I posted this (http://forums.alpinezone.com/12666-sugarbushhistory-com.html) on AZ. Perhaps you'll get some feedback and/or contributions from over there.

Just to keep you all up-to-date, I'm planning a fairly major update/addition to the website the week after next. I've had some great contributions via email, including permission from Jim Niehues (the guy who paints the trail maps) to use an image from his site (jamesniehues.com) on sugarbushhistory.com. I'll let you know when it's done.

BMM, Strat and anyone else who likes checking out the history thing, I saw this link for Vermont historical pics, some awesome shots of the Bush in days gone by. Here is a sample from 1959....anyone eating at this lodge this weekend? Love the oldtime descriptions.

The interesting thing here is no Castlerock pod and some sort of slide/slash in the upper bowl there that is either part of a current trail or long gone.

Very cool! I'll check out the Perkins Library on there and see what I can find! Thanks!

Big update should be completed tomorrow or Saturday. Will let you know when it's done!

It looks as if they logged the lower slopes of Nancy Hanks sometime in the 1971 picture. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Great pics.

Definitely looks like it, but I cannot confirm nor deny actions which I did not witness (courtesy of Captain Kirk in Star Trek VI  )

Looks like a nice tree skiing area. It also might just be the diferent angle of the 1971 pic, more straight on to the Gondola.

I've opened a dialog with Win, and we are addressing that, as well as several other things to make the site better! I'll keep you posted.

Regarding the apparent cleared Castlerock patch...

I think that was actually natural. I vaguely remember having a discussion about this way back on RSN, there's that streambed up there and I think there may have been some sort of slide, similar to the one that hit the Slide Brook area in the mid-1800's (there's some scattered history about that that I've read also, pretty interesting...)

Ah right, it's still visible on some of the photo trail maps now on Sugarbush.com... seems to have expanded and eventually grown back in...

Strat, do you know the story on that trail shown on oldmap5 to the right of Stein's? Its listed as Birdland, but its not the Birdland I know. It appears to run the direction of Reverse Traverse yet follow the fall line of Egan's Woods.

Birdland now is under Bravo, which doesn't exist on that map.

But I think you are right, that trail placement looks interesting. May well be Egan's Woods. 8)

I wonder if any old timer's can fill us in as to why they let it grow in.

Maybe they couldn't keep snow on it. That direction would be an optimal way to catch a lot of wind.

Its amazing how resilient the forest is. 30-40 years later it's gone! I'll have to look for it this weekend.

Aside from Birdland v1.0 and the old Black Watch at Glen Ellen, does anyone know of trails that were cut back in the day that no longer exist? A little birdie told me that SB might have more lattitude with these areas from the USFS with respect to ongoing forestry mgmt.

Strat

Black Watch was the original name of Which Way... I think you're thinking of Donny Brook and Low Road on lower Mt. Ellen that were left to grow in... for those unfamiliar, check out the old Glen Ellen Maps page on Sugarbushhistory.com

This stuff is so cool...When I was growing up at Sunapee there was a half grown-in trail off North Peak called "Lynx" that was about 1/2 to 1/3 as wide as Rumble and almost as steep. Sunapee re-cut it about 7-8 years ago - but much wider of course. Wonder if they had to be grandfathered to do it??

 Good lord... they'd better never re-cut Rumble like that and make it wider! I'd probably have to hurt someone! Jeez... you may as well install snowmaking and start grooming Castlerock... and throw in a detachable six-pack chair while you're at it!

I've been working on a major update on and off for about 2 weeks, and hopefully I will have it all up mid-week. I've had many great email contributions, and have sought out some info myself. The Vermont State Archives department has given me permission to use any of their photos from the UVM Perkins Landscape Change Program (about 15 great photos) for the page. I've also come across some more postcards and little tid-bits, and have had some other neat photo contributions via email.

Also, with the help of Strat (you're a gentleman and a scholar... really!), we now have nearly every single trail map (and they've all got text commentary). Only a couple of missing years. He also played around with NASA World Wind and got some pretty neat satellite-based aerials!

I'm putting on some finishing touches, and still doing some emailing/phone calling, but hope to have most of it wrapped up early to mid week.

I'll post when the new page is up.

Ohhhhh... and if you had any specific pages bookmarked (aside from the homepage), forget it! The page names and filenames will all be different in a couple of days.

Well, not every map... almost every map post-merger... missing a few early 80's, not a whole lot of change taking place in those gaps but it would be awesome to get them...

Pre-merger is still a very open area...
