I noticed something interesting in this week's Valley Reporter weekly Sugarbush update feature... there was a Niehues-looking painting accompanying the description of the Life-Link Mountaineering race, showing, naturally, South, North, and MRG... (for those who don't know, James Niehues is the guy who does most of the ski resort maps in the country, except a few, such as MRG)... this was rather interesting, as I've never seen a painting like that before, though I've always wondered if one existed... I'd definitely like to see that in a bigger size... anyone else notice/interested?

I just got a scanner so I scanned it because I'm strange like that... check it out at www.geocities.com/sugarbushhistory/images/bigmap.jpg

I was browsing Niehues' site as well, and found that he actually made a big summer map of Sugarbush... very cool:

His ski maps are amazing. The summer graphic of the Bush is beautiful. I came across a stack of 5x7 cards with it on the front(golf course promo) going thru a box of old promo material in 1997. I framed one and I am looking at it right now as I type. On a related sidenote, the company that makes all those cool resort maps, sorta cartoon like, is located in Waitsfield. I collect them.

The first one with the 3 resorts is not very realistic or very well done. . Is that a Niehues as well?

It looks Niehues-style, as I said in my first post... there's vertical exaggeration and the perspective is skewed, yes, but it's an interesting map nonetheless, and it's intriguing (at least to me) to see MRG shown with both Bush mountains in one picture...

....is indeed nice. And the one you scanned from the ad is definitely awkward looking compared to reality. Hey, that's advertising....

I could be wrong, but the first image looks suspiciously like something copied from the World Wind program (which exaggerates elevation x2 as a default).

Rustyfan: WW only does 1.5x by default I think - not that it's important. Excellent program though, I've spent many hours with it...

Noski: That's definitely the same image, and I still maintain that it looks like a Niehues, but as for those questioning reality - I think that the one I scanned was distorted and skewed to fit the Valley Reporter Ad, while the one here on the MRV site is the full image. Thanks for the link Noski.
