Not sure if anyone here has been contacted by the State regarding owing the 9% tax for private short term ski house rentals. It appears that they are coming after you if you haven't paid them...some folks are getting bills as high as $32,000 and the taxes are retroactive.

Vermont has no choice but to do this stuff in order to remain the #1 taxing state in the country. If not Vermont might lose the title to Maine. Wink

Seriously tho...anyone know if other states with a lodging/meals tax require ski houses to charge/pay this tax?

I know someone in this area who already got hit with this. I think it was last year, but I'm not sure. He told me about it last fall. I think he got found by advertising.

According to the state, the meals and rooms tax doesn't apply to long-term renting or leasing relationships, but short-term renting does.

Question is, what is the length of time for long/short term. If you rent for the season, is it long term, or short?

Just got an email from someone who does that real estate stuff. Wink

She says that the rooms and meals tax is for less than 30 days, and shouldn't apply to seasonal rentals. So it sounds like members in house should be ok, but the tax should be applicable to those paying guest fees, which every ski house I've been in has done.

Now, I've had a policy for my guests, who come up to ski that I'm paying the rent for that weekend, so they should pay for the food. I wonder if I should pay 9% of that food? And... can I "process" it first? Shocked Laughing

Moderator note: Please refrain from politics. There are many boards for those discussions. This is not one of them.

Thanx for your cooperation.
